With over 25 years of gardening experience, Wendy brings deep, hands-on expertise to helping others grow food successfully in Wisconsin’s unique climate. She is a Garden Coach trained through Gardenary, Inc., specializing in Zone 5 vegetable and herb gardens across urban, suburban, and rural settings. She offers her expertise to help you grow more with less stress.

 

During your on-site consultation, Wendy visits your space to assess growing conditions, understand your goals, and provide a personalized plan for starting or improving your garden—taking into account sunlight, soil health, and what to plant (and when) for long-term success.

Learn the art of sourdough in this hands-on class—and sample some fresh bread, too! Discover the health benefits of sourdough, how to care for a starter, how to mix, knead and shape dough, and instructions for how to bake at home. You’ll take home a dough ball, an organic starter with locally grown flour to feed it, and a recommended supply list. Please bring a small bowl and a tea towel to transport your dough. Recipes contain: wheat. Space is limited and registration is required.

Come learn how to start your own vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings indoors! Together we will plant summer crops so they’re ready for the garden in May. Each participant will take home a high-quality seed starter kit, plant labels, soil, and their choice of tomato, pepper, eggplant, lettuce, basil, marigold, or zinnia seeds. You’ll go home with a list of additional supplies, care, and transplanting instructions.

Using Sourdough in Everyday Recipes

Maybe you have a sourdough starter and know how to make bread, but what about the other things you can do with both active starter and “discard?” Come learn to use sourdough in everyday cooking and baking. Taste test and get experience making some classics—sourdough pizza dough, tortillas, pancakes, and muffins. All materials are provided, and everyone will take home pizza and tortilla dough. Recipes contain: milk, eggs, and wheat. Hands-on.

Come learn a number of ways to prepare broth with bones from any kind of animal you have access to. This simple superfood is such a gift to our joints, skin, gut, and overall health, and it can and should be consumed year-round.

It's Garden Time!

Foraging and Using Nettles: Food, Tea & Tincture

“Stinging” nettles are one of the most nutrient-dense greens around, and they grow all over the Madison area! Learn how to identify, forage, and use nettles in cooking, for tea, and as an herbal tincture (and how to preserve them for later). We’ll taste-test these wild spring greens, and each participant will take home a bag of dried nettles.

Composting and Caring for Your Soil

The secret to edible gardening success is in the SOIL you’re growing in. Come learn how to build and care for your soil year-round in a way that makes your plants thrive. We’ll explore ways to turn all kinds of organic materials into beautiful, rich compost and compost tea, as well as how to use these in your garden. You’ll also take home a bag of compost for making compost tea.
